Can You Spin This? Heck to the Yeah say Debbie Johnson and Silja Devine!

by The SpinArtiste on February 21, 2013

This week we have the “Red” edition of Can You Spin This? and I decided to give you a treat.  We have not just one, but TWO answers to the question, “Can You Spin This?”!

Our first is from Debbie Johnson of Hampton Artistic YarnsLucky Debbie got a treasure from my own personal stash – a velour blouse — the back was black and featured an asian woman:

Debbie transformed this thrift store find into a very pretty and wearable yarn!

In Debbie’s own words: “I cut the shirt into strips and spun it with some black Wensleydale locks from Namaste Farms. It was a really fun spin!”

Now, onto Silja’s challenge…

These fun little items traveled many miles from Pennsylvania to Norway:

Yes! Christmas garland…but Silja was up to figuring a way to turn these gaudy strands into some much more elegant:

So nice and crisp and clean and wintery!!!

Per Silja (www.silja-devine.com) : “As soon as I opened the package for this challenge, I knew how I could spin these tinsel garlands.

I spun a superbulky thick and thin from some white Southdown, and plied the tinsel and superbulky together with extra twist.

I then Andean plied the yarn to even out the extra twist and make the yarn thicker.”

I love that she chose to Andean ply this!

We’ve got some more challenge yarns coming our way — I’ve been getting word that the February packages have arrived!  Well, in some cases, I also hear a little gnashing of teeth and I’ve even heard rumblings of a couple of people plotting their revenge by saving items to send to me.  I will be sending out items in groups of five this year each month — if you haven’t signed up yet to be included, feel free to send me an email at thespinartiste@gmail.com.  And, don’t be scared or shy!  Try it…

I promised to announce the giveaway winner(s) for the wonderful items from Renee Jones of Carolina Fiber Company and now is the time!  The winner of the gorgeous batt is Allison and the winner of the beautiful yarn is  Sierra.  I will be in touch to coordinate getting your prizes to you.
