Special Sunday Night Edition: 27th Street Fibers Knitting Needles Giveaway!

image_pdfimage_print

It’s a fact that I love the Size 35, 12 inches long, hand-made knitting needles from Ron Hysom of 27th Street Fibers. So, while Ron and I were working on his Featured Artist piece, we came up with the idea of having a giveaway for a pair of the needles for a lucky Spin Artiste reader!

Here are the needles “in action” — I’ve been knitting a scarf with some of Ron’s wonderful yarns in seed stitch — Seed stitch really shows off the colors and textures in hand spun yarns…I don’t weave (yet), so I call it my “faux” weaving.

OK, so now onto the contest…

How to Enter? Just comment here and include what you would knit if you win the needles! If you feel so inclined, you can also share a link to one of your favorite patterns using Size 35 needles. That would just be a bonus for all of us.

How to Get a Second Entry? Tweet, Facebook, or otherwise share this giveaway with others, and leave a second comment letting me know that you did!

Deadline? The winner will be selected next Sunday, May 29th.

Best of luck to all!  I’m sure you will be very pleased if you win!!

  1. I just found this site in time!! I’d love those…I knit all kinds of things and would love to try a shawl with them.
Those are beautiful handcrafted needles and would be on ‘display’ when not in use!
    Thanks for being so generous!!

  2. Wow! I think I would probably start by knitting a rug using some roving from my stash. Thanks for the chance to enter and, hopefully, win these awesome needles!

  3. Rebecca Graham

If I were to win these wonderful Needles,I would leave it up to the Needles and the yarn to work thier magic to create a lovely garmet.

  4. I think these would be great for my daughter to learn to knit with. She has a hard time with the smaller needles.

  5. Wow, I have never knit with size 35 needles. I’m thinking maybe a rug for my bedroom or a lovely shawl.
    Lisa

  6. I’m impressed that these needles are hand made. Love that! Thanks for showing how they gauge out with your sample scarf. You should learn to weave, then you will really see how his yards work. Yelp, I am going to share this contest to others who love to knit…

    Thanks Maryann…

  7. Bernice Smith

I’d knit a nice shawl out of hand spun yarn or a nice cozy afghan. It’d be a blast to use these needles!!! Thanks so much for the great opportunity to try and win them.

  8. Michele White

I am an intermediate knitter, but I love it! I would work with the bulkiest of my homespun wool/alpaca blend, and as I wear shawls daily all year long – I would knit a lacy, long rectangular shawl that I can love and cuddle! Much love goes into my homespun yarn and it means something very special to me that the tools I use are handcrafted and cared for!
Thank you SO much for this opportunity

  9. Wow! Those needles look amazing! I’ve never used any so big before, but I think I’d love to make a cozy cowl with some handspun yarn~!

Thanks so much for sharing this with us!

  10. What an interesting interview with an interesting and talented man. Thanks. Should I be lucky enough to win these, I’d like to spin some special fiber (maybe Winsleydale?) and knit something multidirectional using short rows.

  11. I would spin some fuzzy green Finn Wool, adding lots of long Wensleydale locks embedded here and there, into a soft not-too-thick and not-too-thin yarn; and then use those needles to knit a little “Troll Vest” for my granddaughter.

  12. I’d knit up some Bulky Blue Sky Alpaca in my stash and make a capelet… or as I like to call it “a Shoulder HUG”. Knits up quick and warms the shoulders in no time… perfect for Spring in Maine!

  13. AliCarmen Carico

I’d use the needles for a fiber art piece: A knitted bird’s nest, using a recently completed handspun yarn called “Jessie’s Spring,”–east friesan/alpaca blend plyed with lincoln/mohair sparkle. The finished item would resemble a partially completed bird’s nest resting over three finger sized natural twigs, with ends sharpened to resemble needles. Possibly some wool locks and miscellaneous fiber tucked in among the knitting, and perhaps some knitted leaves on the branches.

  14. What beautiful needles. If I won these I would knit all kinds of things. A little blanket, a shawl, a loose over sweater, a scarf and then another scarf, a bath mat…

  15. If I had these needles, I would knit a heavy duty dog for my Great Pyrenees pup. I would knit it out of torn stripes of old blue jeans. So far she had ripped two expensive pet store beds to shreds! Old blue jeans are so nice and cozy. She would never rip up a bed made from them… 🙂

  16. I think it would be awsome to knit up some curtains with these, maybe in a bulky cotton blend with an overstated lace motif. I think that would be really eyecatching and unique.

    1. i am about to head to colorado…19 hours one way, in the car with a two yr and 13 yr old :)…..this is when i plan to teach myself to knit.

  17. I would knit a banana hammock to hang under the upper cabinets and safely nestle my bananas, protecting them against the bumps and bangs of the regular fruit bowl.

  18. Those needles look amazing! They’re exactly what I need in order to knit up some of this super-chunky yarn I’ve been spinning. I’ll knit a toddler poncho out of novelty yarns if I win.

  19. I would make a prayer shawl for a loving friend who is facing some devastating health issues. Using these needles with hand spun yarn to make the prayer shawl would bring her comfort, and she greatly appreciates handmade items. Now, on to facebook.

  20. I just received some bulky chenille that would make a great shawl using these needles. I am a handweaver (Weavolution founder and webmistress) and have been knitting for over 50 years (I started very young). I love hand carved tools and these needles look awesome.
    Claudia

  21. I would make an open-work vest. It would work up so fast with those amazing needles!

  22. I’d knit two rectangles out of super thick handspun then whipstitch them together and add a long handle to make a pouch/bag for my keys & phone for when I’m walking with my baby in my Ergo baby carrier.

  23. Those are awesome! I’d knit some big fat graffiti for a statue in my city I’ve been thinking of “tagging”! We have a giant “blind justice” head in front our courthouse I’ve always wanted to knit a blindfold for. Just to make people really think about that premise.

  24. i loved the article and have admired Ron’s hand made knitting needles . . . i think i would make a large and whimsical yarn letting the fiber do the talking . . . and introduce the needles to the yarn to see what they wanted to make . . .

  25. Love those needles… I have a bulky handspun Alpaca yarn ..that I bought years ago..before I learned to spin, and it needs large needles to work it up.. nothing has worked that I’ve tried.. and I refuse to buy those big plastic needles.. just unsightly! Now, I could really make the yarn sing and be heard with these needles! 😀

  26. Size 35 is my favorite for super bulky handspun yarns. I think I’d start taking some of the yarns in my stash and knitting them up into freeform scarves and cowls and such. 🙂 I will share this giveaway on my Facebook pages!!

  27. Lorelei Milburn

I have only recently discovered the wonderful art fiber from Neauveau and Pluckyfluff. I would love to use these needles to create something with art fiber.

  28. Lorelei Milburn

and now I am sharing this with all my Facebook friends!

I am doing my best to convert them all to the fiber arts!

  29. Danielle Loomer

These needles are so cool. There is so much I can knit with them a hat, a scarf or a shawl. So many possibilities! I have no pattern to share because I would want to just let my creativity take hold of me.

  30. I think I’d knit a scarf from the handspun that I’m just learning to make. I’m sure that I could manage to spin up some nice chunky yarn to go with those lovely needles.

  31. I would love to win these awesome size needles I would make a scarf using them with some homespun fluffy mohair alpaca blend that I made… Would be glad to show the scarf when I finish if I was to win them. thank so
    blessings to all

  32. Donna Houseright

I would love to design something with the turquoise merino lumpy bumpy yarn currently on my Symphony wheel by Kromski. Just learned to knit cables, so it would be nice to put one on a scarf with these needles. Hand made is always best! Thanks for the opportunity

  33. I have some handspun wool from Nairobi, Kenya, that my son & family sent me from there last Christmas. lite natural and dark brown, almost black. Would make a wonderful seed stitch cowl for these Maine winters! Maybe some wristers too.

  34. These would be great for some chunky yarn. I’ve been making art batts and trying to spin them really chunky and these needles would go great with them! Thanks for the chance to win.

  35. Would definitely knit my new niece a baby blanket. And then maybe a shawl for me.

  36. What lovely needles! I’d knit a bulky, warming wrap, and maybe a blanket or throw with these. Oh! And leg warmers, too.

  37. I will knit something beautiful and abstract with these needles if I am lucky enough to win them.

  38. I had to sell my spinning wheel 🙁 but I still have and love my spindles. I would spin a thick-and-thin merino angora blend on my massive Louet spindle and make a log cabin afghan (you know, for those chilly Louisiana winters…)

  39. Anne Sturtevant

The first thing that I would try with these needles (and they are gorgeous!) would be a luscious yarn I bought yesterday: Lumpy Bumpy Yarn by Charlene (in charcoal grays from light to dark). I think this size of needle would help show off the thins and thicks of this lumpy, delicious yarn.

  40. Anne Sturtevant

I “shared” the Spin Artiste’s link with all of my Facebook friends (or at least those who haven’t turned off my feed because they’re sick of hearing about yarn!).

  41. beautiful needles! i would love to knit handspun art yarn into a scarf of capelet with them 🙂 this site is so much fun to visit!

  42. Wow! I’ve been spinning some core yarns and lock yarns that are enormous. I would make some funky stuff with those huge needle and crazy yarns…..

  43. lovely –love the feel of handcrafted needles! my handspun BFL bulky and a nice wrap for my shoulders!
totally gonna share this on FB

  44. Sharon Vreeland

I would use some of my handspun and these needles to make a big felted knitting bag.

  45. First I would knit a beautiful open stitch market bag from some delightful orange cotton hand spun yarn I just made. This would be great for summer shopping and travel. My next projust would be a baby hammock for my photographer friend. These are beautiful handmade needles!

  46. Across the street from the West Bend Library are three large copper frogs, seated on a bench, each playing a different musical instrument. Someone puts straw hats on them each summer….I want to make them colorful knitted scarves for the winter. That’s how’d I’d use the size 35 needles.

  47. I would make a lovely and warm blanket with these awesome needle! Maybe some comfy hats and scarves. How about a beautiful sweater too! Wow!

  48. Linda Bonavita

I’ve worked with wooden needles. They remind me of simpler times and of my grandmother. I would knit a lap blanket. My church is donating these to the town’s nursing home !

  49. Connie Phelps

I am a new spinner and have just started knitting with my handspun yarn. I would love to use your knitting needles to make a scarf out of my alpaca/merino handspun! How much fun!
