Joelle McCarthy of Corn Creek Fiber is one of my favorite fiber artists and a really GOOD sport.  She makes beautiful, delicate things and I thought I could throw her a curve ball by sending her this:

CYST - JM - 1

As you can see, it is a crime committed in the name of felting.  Someone spent a lot of time on this and it needed a rescue.  While I thought I could perhaps stump Joelle, I forgot one rather obvious thing:  Joelle knows her way around felt and color.  Now, I will let Joelle tell you about what happened after she received this splendid item:

“I was not sure what to expect, so I checked the mail everyday, waiting for the package to arrive.  It finally came and I ripped the package open.  Inside was a felted hat.  Haha, I laughed and called my husband.

On the way home from work, I set the hat on my dashboard for inspiration.  The shape of it reminded me of a leprechaun hat.  So the first step was to get out the dye pot.  I over dyed the hat with emerald and kelly green, then cut shamrocks and one four leaf clover out of the felt.  Polwarth/silk, corriedale, mohair, and Lincoln locks were all dyed and carded into batts of various shades of green.  In one batt, I added shredded felt hat for extra texture and color. CYST - JM - 2

CYST - JM - 3

With everything dyed, all that was left was to spin it up.  The first batt was spun loosely, shamrocks and clover added, and then plied with a green thread.  The second batt was spun with more twist to show off the chunks of felt.  For the final touch, a gold metallic thread was added along with twists of gold beads.CYST - JM - 4

In the end, I have 30 yards of “Lá Fhéile Pádraig Sona Duit”; now just some green mead and colcannon.”

Awesome, Joelle!  Such a cute yarn and tied into the St. Patrick’s Day holiday coming up!!

I am getting ready to send out the March “Can You Spin This?” packages and the February results are still rolling in…if you want to try, don’t be shy — just send me an email at thespinartiste@gmail.com to get on the list.  I will be sending out five items a month each month this year so there’s plenty of time and opportunity to join in the fun.

Lately, I feel like the rabbit from Alice in Wonderland running around saying, “I’m late, I’m late…” and yes, I’m a little late with the February Love column.  But, it’s up now so you can see what I’ve been loving over the last month.

AL-LF dream 1And, drumroll please…the winner of the Alicia Lee of Dreamcatcher is Emori!  Congratulations, Emori — I will be in touch via email to coordinate your receipt of this terrific prize!!

If you haven’t cast your vote yet for your favorite in the current round of Secret Stash, please do so by leaving a comment on this post.  The voting ends this coming Friday.  The projects this time were out of this world!  If you want to be part of the next one, there are a few spots left — use this Pay Pal button to reserve your kit:
